High-impact practices (HIPs) are an evidence-based way to increase student engagement and create a valuable student learning experience. Incorporating HIPs into your course will benefit all students by offering a deeper learning of the material, increase retention, all while promoting overall academic success.

Attending one or all of OEIA's Spring Workshop Series will provide unparalleled opportunities to engage students in the co-construction of knowledge, leading to enhancement of their learning, success, and professional development.

High-impact practices (HIPs) provide unparalleled opportunities to engage students in the co-construction of knowledge, leading to enhancement of their learning, success, and professional development. While the literature describes the affordances of numerous HIPs, it can be unclear as to how one effectively selects and integrates HIP(s) into their courses. In this session, we will address this concern by providing a brief overview of several HIPs and considerations/strategies for their adoption in the classroom.

This session will provide attendees with structured time to generate and describe ideas for a new or refined HIP that could be implemented within their courses or programs. Feedback provided by peers and session facilitators will aid attendees in shaping their goals, objectives, and activities to maximize student-level outcomes.

As is the case with any innovation, we want to know if it “worked.” In this workshop, we will discuss how quantitative and qualitative approaches can be employed to evaluate and/or assess HIPs-related outcomes. Attendees will have an opportunity to apply those strategies to hypothetical cases and to map specific evaluation and assessment strategies to their own HIPs objectives.

HIPs are only intended to be implemented a single time, right? Not so fast. In this session, we discuss strategies for refining, scaling, and sustaining HIPs efforts. Notably, conversation will also focus on mechanisms to assist students in discussing their HIP experiences (more than including it as a line item on their CV or résumé).

As a culminating experience in the series, this session will serve as a gallery walk, enabling attendees to share out and receive feedback on their HIPs blueprints.
